(WA) Redmond, Attorney, ASG - Microsoft


Are you interested in collaborating with legal, engineering and business development to support the Bing team that delivers web search, advertising platform, and conversation as a platform and chat bots?   The Applications and Services Group in Microsoft’s Legal and Corporate Affairs department is looking for an attorney to support Bing syndication and distribution efforts, in addition to working closely with engineers that support our search advertising platform.   In supporting Bing and Bing Ads, you will be integral to Bing’s monetization and machine learning strategies, as a key part of Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. You will work with a wide variety of stakeholders on cutting edge legal and business challenges, including negotiating and drafting syndication and distribution agreements, product development counseling, and advising on privacy, security and intellectual property issues. 

Primary responsibilities will include: 
  • Structure, draft and negotiate transactional documents relating to the development, licensing, and distribution of Bing’s web search capabilities, including distribution of its knowledge and action graph, APIs for specific content verticals (such as image, news, etc.), and other custom deals relating to Bing’s APIs and content;
  • Counsel and advise business development and engineering clients on a wide variety of complex and developing legal and business issues regarding search and search ads, and syndication partnerships across the globe; 
  • Provide coordinated advice to the engineering teams that design, develop, globalize, and deploy Bing Ads features, including privacy, security, intellectual property, and related legal, regulatory and policy issues;
  • Collaborate with legal department colleagues and policy specialists on a variety of legal and regulatory issues, with an emphasis on privacy, security and regulatory compliance; 
  • Novel or complex issues arising from above responsibilities.
We are looking for an attorney who meets the following requirements: 
  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials;
  • 7+ years as a practicing attorney, with solid experience in commercial and technology transactions, and in counseling on intellectual property, online services and privacy issues;
  • Outstanding analytical, organizational, writing and oral communication skills, as well as strong record of effective cross-group collaboration in a diverse and matrixed environment;
  • Flexible and analytical thinker able to quickly and accurately identify legal issues in a complex environment and to develop solutions by exercising confident judgment in ambiguous situations; 
  • Keen business sense, ability to think strategically, results oriented, and desire to establish a trusted advisor relationship with business clients;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently, meet demanding deadlines, prioritize workflow and adjust to frequent workload fluctuations; 
  • Prior in-house experience with a public company and/or law firm experience working with Internet or high tech companies is preferred; and
  • Proven ability to work with teams and partners across multiple geographies is preferred.
